A comprehensive plan is more than a state requirement. At Burrell School District, it became an opportunity to bring together teachers, administrators, board members, parents and community members to help shape the district's future.
Over the past several months, Burrell's Comprehensive Planning Task Force worked to answer an important question:
How do we continue building on Burrell's strengths while preparing our students for the future?
Rather than relying on the same advisory groups year after year, the district introduced a task force approach that encouraged broader participation from across the Burrell community. The goal was to hear from a diverse group of voices, gather meaningful feedback, and ensure the plan reflected the needs and priorities of the people it serves.
The planning process included surveys, collaborative meetings and open discussions. Community feedback, along with district data, helped guide conversations throughout the process and shape the goals that will lead Burrell over the next three years.
As those conversations continued, several priorities consistently rose to the top: maintaining strong academic programs, supporting student success, improving communication, fostering a greater sense of belonging and addressing concerns raised by families, including student well-being.
Just as important as the final plan was the process used to create it. By bringing together different perspectives and encouraging thoughtful discussion, the district gained valuable insight into what matters most to students, families, staff and the community.
The Comprehensive Plan was approved by the Burrell Board of School Directors on March 17 and submitted to the Pennsylvania Department of Education on March 31. While those milestones marked the completion of the planning process, they also marked the beginning of the work ahead.
Over the next three years, the plan will serve as a roadmap for district priorities, helping guide decision-making, instructional initiatives and future opportunities for students. As implementation begins, many of those efforts will also support Burrell's emerging Portrait of a Buc, a framework that defines the knowledge, skills and character traits students will develop throughout their educational journey.
The conversation doesn't end with the completion of the plan.
Burrell remains committed to listening, learning and growing alongside its families and community. Through initiatives like Parents as Allies, ongoing community conversations and future engagement opportunities, parents, students and community members will continue to play an important role in helping shape the district's future.
A plan alone doesn't move a district forward.
People do.
By listening to one another, sharing ideas and working together, Burrell has created more than a strategic plan. It has built a shared vision for the future, one that will continue to grow through the partnership of its schools, families and community.
