The e-Sports program at Burrell School District has quickly become a cornerstone of student engagement and competitive spirit. From its humble beginnings to its current success, the program has evolved into a dynamic and inclusive environment that fosters both personal and team growth.

The Birth of Burrell's E-Sports Team

The journey of Burrell's e-Sports team began when Principals Travis Welch and John Boylan reached out to Officer Rob Aquaviva, the district’s school resource officer, to help establish an e-Sports club and team. Being an avid recreational gamer, Officer Aquaviva was excited about the opportunity and provided valuable feedback and support. "Principals Travis Welch (HMS) and John Boylan (BHS) reached out to me to see if I would have any interest in helping Burrell create an E-Sports club and an E-Sports team. Being an avid recreational gamer myself, I was happy to lend a hand and provide feedback," he shared.

Initially, the team would meet after school with volunteer coaches Kevin Pasko, Officer Rob, and Courtney Barbiaux. Students would play together as a club, and the Szish brothers (Ben and Adam) competed as a pair in Super Smash Brothers during the first year. Brayden Vickers also made a significant impact early on, winning an independent Rocket League tournament at Penn Trafford HS. Eventually, the team has changed. High school students now have their own meetings at the high school, allowing for more organized and focused sessions.

League Participation and Success

Burrell plays in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Esports Association (PIEA). The organization has been around for about 6 years and helps over 200 high schools with over 2,000 students. Burrell currently competes in Rocket League and has achieved notable success, including winning their Conference Championship for the Fall 2024 season. "Led by team Captain Brayden Vickers, the team was able to win their Conference Championship for the Fall 2024 season," said Officer Aquaviva. "Our hope is that they can repeat this for the Spring 2025 season and move on to the State Championships later this year."

Team and Equipment

The e-Sports program is popular at Burrell, with around 100 kids participating. The team's experience has greatly improved with the addition of 10 new gaming computers on campus. These computers have high-quality equipment that makes them perform better and enjoy themselves more. "Our Esports room includes 2 Nintendo Switches and two large screen TVs, 10 gaming computers, and my old school games from my childhood like the original Atari, NES, and Nintendo 64," shared Ms. Courtney Barbiaux, the middle school coach.

Competing together in one space is crucial for the team. It fosters a sense of community and motivation, and enhances team dynamics and camaraderie. "It is important for the team to compete together in one space rather than from their own homes. Being together as a group enhances team dynamic and camaraderie," emphasized Ms. Barbiaux.

Brayden Vickers: A National Star

Brayden Vickers, a highly ranked Rocket League player, continues to rise in competitive rank. He has had a significant impact on the team and the school. His involvement has likely inspired other students and contributed to the team's success. His achievements have definitely set a high standard for the program and sent him to national success.

Future Prospects

The future of e-Sports at Burrell School District is promising. The program wants to keep doing well, build relationships, and give students good experiences, including scholarships and jobs. "It is our hope that the Esports program will continue to be successful and continue to foster relationships between the students and provide them with valuable experiences both in a competitive environment, and in regards to scholarship and employment opportunities," said Officer Aquaviva

Burrell's e-Sports program is a testament to the power of community and collaboration. The program keeps growing with the help of dedicated coaches and new equipment. It offers students a unique and enriching experience in competitive gaming.
